1. Introduction

24U SimpleDialog Plug-In is a FileMaker Pro plug-in. It allows your FileMaker Pro databases to display modal dialog boxes with text prompts, text fields, password fields, check boxes, radio buttons, and pop-up menus, based on real-time data from your database. You can use this plug-in to promt user for required data input just the same way you are used to work with the built-in Show Message command and Status(CurrentMessageChoice) function.

24U SimpleDialog Plug-In comes with a tutorial FileMaker Pro file that shows you how to use it. The tutorial will give you step-by-step instructions to use the plug-in for displaying any kinds of dialogs, from the simplest prompt-only dialog to a fully customizable input dialog.
 

2. System requirements

Minimum requirements:

  Macintosh with Mac OS 7.6, Appearance 1.0, and FileMaker Pro 4.0
  or
  PC 386 with Microsoft Windows 95, and FileMaker 4.0
 

Recommended configuration:

  Power Macintosh with Mac OS 8.1 or newer or Mac OS X, and FileMaker Pro 4.0 or newer
  or
  200MHz PC with Microsoft Windows 95 or newer, and FileMaker Pro 4.0 or newer
 

This plug-in is compatible with FileMaker Pro 6.0 and Mac OS X.
 

3. Installation

To install 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In, follow these easy steps:

  1. If you did not do this yet, download and expand the 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In archive.
  2. Open the expanded 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In folder.
  3. On a Mac, move the "24uSimpleDialog.fmx" file to your "FileMaker Extensions" folder.
  3. On a PC, move the "24uSimpleDialog.fmx" file to your "FileMaker\System" folder.

 

4. Quick Start

To learn how to use 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In, open the file "24uSimpleDialogTutorial" and follow the on-screen instructions. This tutorial will show you how to use the functions provided by 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In to display standard types of modal dialogs, as well as completely custom ones. As the conception is copying the built-in Show Message feature of FileMaker Pro, you should be able to begin using this plug-in within just a few minutes.

There are two versions of the tutorial, one for FileMaker Pro 4.x, and one for FileMaker Pro 5.x. If you are using FileMaker Pro 4.0 or 4.1, use the tutorial with the ".fp3" extension. If you are using any newer version, use the other one, having the ".fp5" suffix.
 

5. Troubleshooting

Before you contact our technical support regarding problems or difficulties using 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In, please check if your issue is not listed below:

24uD-ShowDialog returns a non-zero number as its result
If the 24uD-ShowDialog function fails, it will return a non-zero error code as its result. This can be caused by a system error, but more likely the reason will be an incorrectly specified dialog definition. Check if you are not using special characters (|&:\) in a place where they are not expected. If you need to use any of these characters in field names and values, or button names, try preceding them with a backslash character. Please refer to the "24uSimpleDialogTutorial" file to learn correct format of the dialog definition.

24uD-ShowDialog returns -1 for dialogs that worked in version 1.0
The version 1.1 of 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In introduced a new feature - text and password field validations. This new feature also brings a new limitation - if you want to use the character "{" as the first character of your default value, you must explicitly specify validation options. If you don't want to use validation, simply precede your default value with the plain format specifier "{}".

The plug-in functions return an empty string as a result
The 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In is probably not installed or deactivated in your application preferences. Open the Application Preferences from the Edit menu, click on the "Plug-Ins" tab, and make sure that 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In is there and that it is enabled.

6. Shareware Notice

Please note that 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In is SHAREWARE. That means it is not free and you have to pay a licence fee if you want to keep it. You can install 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In and try it for the period of 14 days. After this period, 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In can stop working and require a registration code. We will provide you with your registration code after you pay for your licence.

You can freely distribute 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In as long as you distribute the original compacted archive untouched and you don't charge money for the distribution. If you want to distribute 24U SimpleDialog Plug-In on a physical medium, such as CD-ROM, or if you want to distribute it in other form than the original compacted archive, you should ask for our permission.
